about the green abacus
Welcome to The Green Abacus. Maybe this is your first encounter with us. Either you found your way here through one of our blog posts, or our Facebook page. Or maybe through our Crowdfunding page, or a referral from one of our great customers.
However you found us, you’re here to get to know us better. That’s what this page intends to do.
First, something about us…
We’re the geeky CPA firm that purposefully has a lot of personality. We believe that companies that grow cultures will be stronger and better prepared for success than companies that treat culture as an afterthought.
Let’s break that down a bit.
As entrepreneurs, we get wrapped up in our ideas. Our ideas get turned into reality. But if you’re going to grow beyond yourself, you need more than an idea. The President of Pixar, Ed Catmull, said “If you give a good idea to a mediocre team, they will screw it up. If you give a mediocre idea to a brilliant team, they will either fix it or throw it away and come up with something better.” Your job, as founder, is to create the culture in which your idea will flourish. Culture is not about foosball tables and beanbag chairs. Culture is about the personality of your company. Your core values. A vision for a better tomorrow.
Our culture is reflected in our Core Values — Self-Assessment, Invention, Profit, Enjoyment.
Self-assessment means we continue to identify what is keeping us from being a better self, a better team, a better company.
Invention means that we’ll continue to try new things rather than settle for what we’ve already done.
Profit means that self-assessment and invention should result in gain. It also affirms that the goal of business is to add value to the world. Read more: 3 Truths And A Lie About The Necessity Of Profit
Enjoyment means that we’re not content to just be profitable. We push further up and further in to greater enjoyment in what we do in our work. Read more: It’s More Than Superheroes: Expressing Enjoyment Through Everything We Do
We call this the Path to Heroic Deeds. This is how we want interact with your company. You’re about to enlist a team of superheroes to fight beside you.
That’s our unique personality. We are geeks, and not just about accounting. Comics, movies, technology, TV, books, fitness, food, data. We love our hobbies, and we bring that to our work.
We think you should be free to express your personality. You’re going to spend a lot of time in your work. You’re too valuable to leave your true self at home, and even better, your personality could very well become one of your differentiating characteristics in a crowded marketplace. Embrace that. Make it part of your vision.
We’re big on vision. It’s what got you out of bed this morning. It’s what made you take that first step out the door from your previous (and hopefully last) employer. Entrepreneurs saw a Problem in the world that needed to be fixed, and set about fixing it better than anyone else. And we will encourage you to hold onto that.
Leading a company is a scary time. Figuring out your customers’ needs, building the right team to execute, more ideas than time to pull it off… it’s an often overwhelming task that will take everything you’ve got. But we don’t think fear should hold you back. We’re all afraid; courage is action in the face of fear. And you don’t have to do it alone, let us join in the fight alongside you.
Even Superman needed the Justice League.
